President Pohamba meets Malagasy leaders
President Hifikepunye Pohamba met two leaders in the Madagascar political impasse in his capacity as chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) at State House yesterday (18 april 2011).
He held separate meetings with 36-year-old Andry Rajoelina, leader of the High Authority of Transition in Madagascar and that of the de facto government in that country. Later in the day he met with ousted President Marc Ravalomanana (to prove). (Note from madagate editor: in fact, the following persons have been received by President Pohamba : Olivier Andrianarisooa, Henri Roger Ranaivoson and Brian Currin).
The meetings were arranged at the request of the Madagascar parties.
Pohamba said SADC, as well as the Namibian Government, have not recognised the government headed by Rajoelina.
This position is consistent with a policy of the African Union (AU) and SADC regarding unconstitutional changes of government on the African continent.
Pohamba said this policy remains unchanged, but added that SADC has committed itself to help the Malagasy parties find a lasting solution to the political crisis there.
SADC has taken a decision to talk to all parties, including Rajoelina, he said. “The ongoing political crisis has caused unnecessary suffering to the people of Madagascar and should be resolved without further delay,” Pohamba emphasised.
“SADC is determined to spare no effort to assist the Malagasy people to achieve peace.”
Former President Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique is the appointed SADC mediator in Madagascar.
Pohamba urged both parties to put the interest of their country and people before that of their respective parties and to work towards national reconciliation and political stability, and to avoid resorting to violence and political intimidation.
Madagascar will head to the polls on September 14 to elect a president and parliament. There are 135 political parties from a population of 20 million.

Le président Pohamba rencontre des dirigeants Malagasy
Le Président Hifikepunye Pohamba a rencontré deux dirigeants concernés par l'impasse politique à Madagascar, en sa qualité de Président de la Communauté de Développement de l’Afrique australe (SADC), à la « State House » (Palais d’Etat), hier (le 18 avril 2011).
Il a tenu, d’abord, une réunion séparée avec Andry Rajoelina 36 ans, le dirigeant de la Haute Autorité de Transition de Madagascar et du gouvernement de facto dans ce pays. Plus tard, dans la journée, il a rencontré le Président évincé Marc Ravalomanana (à vérifier). (Ndlr : en fait, ce sont les personnes suivantes qui ont été reçues par le Président Pohamba : Olivier Andrianarisoa, Henri Roger Ranaivoson et Brian Currin).
Ces rencontres ont été arrangées à la demande des protagonistes de Madagascar.
Pohamba a déclaré que la SADC, aussi bien que le Gouvernement Namibien, n'ont pas reconnu le gouvernement dirigé par Rajoelina.
Cette position est en accord avec la politique de l'Union africaine (AU) et de la SADC concernant les changements inconstitutionnels de gouvernement sur le continent africain.
Pohamba a ajouté que cette politique reste inchangée, mais que la SADC s'est porté volontaire pour aider les protagonistes Malagasy à trouver une solution durable de l’actuelle crise politique.
La SADC a pris la décision de dialoguer avec toutes les parties, y compris Rajoelina. Le Président Pohamba a mis l’accent sur le fait que “la crise politique en cours provoque la souffrance inutile au peuple de Madagascar et devrait être résolue sans plus tarder ”.
Il a ajouté que “la SADC ne s’épargnera aucun effort pour aider le peuple Malagasy à retrouver la paix.” L'ancien Président du Mozambique, Joaquim Chissano, demeure le médiateur nommé de la SADC pour cette crise à Madagascar.
Le Président Pohamba a lancé un appel à toutes les parties pour qu’elles agissent au nom de l'intérêt de leur pays et de leur peuple, plutôt que pour leurs intérêts respectifs. Dans ce contexte, les parties doivent travailler vers la réconciliation nationale et la stabilité politique et éviter de recourir à la violence et à l'intimidation politique.
Le peuple Malagasy se rendra aux urnes le 14 septembre (2011 donc) pour élire le Président et les membres du Parlement. A Madagascar, Il y a 135 partis politiques pour une population de 20 millions d’habitants.
