Statement of the U. S. Embassy
The Embassy of the United States support students’ right to peaceful protest, and equally acknowledge the government’s responsibility to maintain order. We are concerned about what appears to be the use of excessive force by some members of the security forces during the arrest of student leader Jean Pierre Randrianamboarina yesterday in connection with the student protests in Ankatso, Antananarivo, though we appreciate the restraint and intervention shown by other members of the security forces during the incident. We hope to see a thorough investigation in this matter, to ensure against any possible use of excessive force in any future arrest situation.

L’Ambassade des Etats-Unis soutient le droit des étudiants à manifester d’une manière pacifique et reconnaît également la responsabilité du gouvernement de maintenir l’ordre. Nous nous sentons concernés par cet incident qui apparait comme étant un usage excessif de la force par certains membres des forces de l’ordre lors de l’arrestation du meneur du mouvement des étudiants Jean Pierre Randrianamboarina en rapport avec la manifestation estudiantine qui s’est déroulée hier à Ankatso, Antananarivo. Nous apprécions la retenue que certains éléments des forces de l’ordre ont fait preuve. Nous espérons que les autorités compétentes procéderont à une enquête en profondeur sur cet incident, pour éviter des usages excessifs de la force dans d’autres situations d’arrestation.
